Our mission is very simple and comes from the words of Jesus in Luke 18:1;
“Then He told them a parable about the necessity for them to pray always without becoming weary” (emphasis mine),
We believe that an end to abortion is very possible! Scripture tells us that nothing is impossible when God is involved! (Luke 1:37). The Catechism of the Catholic Church quotes St. John Chrysostom saying:
“Nothing is equal to prayer; for what is impossible it makes possible, what is difficult, easy...”
To summarize the parable in Luke 18, there was a widow with an enemy and a judge who did not care. She constantly begged the judge to bring justice to her situation, and he constantly ignored her. Finally, he gave in just so she would leave him alone! Jesus invites us to consider the unjust judge. He didn’t help her for the right reasons. His justice was not executed out of a love of God or man – he cared for neither! Still, right motive or not, he did grant her request against her adversary!
“And will not God vindicate His elect, who cry to Him day and night? Will He delay long over them? I tell you, He will vindicate them speedily.” (Luke 18:7-8, emphasis mine).
It is no secret that we, as people who respect life and its Creator, are engaged in battle against a “culture of death”, whether we like it or not. Every day thousands of innocent unborn children are robbed of their very life! It doesn’t take a very deep analysis to see that this is a certain and undeniable affront to the entire human race!
Allow me to offer some perspective. If a person goes out one day and murders a few hundred innocent people, you can be sure that there will be constant news coverage for days! People who have no connection whatsoever to the deceased or their families find themselves mourning. Flags are lowered to half-staff. All of these reactions are appropriate; we should mourn the death of our neighbor!
But we must remain aware of the thousands of lives lost every day to abortion! Consider this: from the moment sperm and egg meet and the egg is fertilized the child’s entire DNA structure is present. The only difference between that brand new baby and a five-year-old child going off to Kindergarten is a few years of growth, not a change in their DNA structure. It's also true that a five-year-old child is no less human than the thirty year old or the 100 year old simply because they haven’t reached that age yet! So how could we be less offended at this daily massacre?
There are many ways that people have found to fight this terrible evil. Some go to abortion clinics to pray or to talk to women going in. Some organize marches in support of Pro-Life principles. Some react violently (which seems antithetical to us). The list of ways to fight is probably as long as the list of people fighting. Our approach is not new here: prayer is the oldest, most effective weapon we have! We take the words of Jesus to heart when He says that God will vindicate His elect who cry to Him day and night! And so our mission is to do just that: Pray Day and Night.
For these next few months, we will be raising awareness about this, then we will launch the actual project on March 25, 2010, the Feast of the Annunciation of our Lord (when Liturgical tradition celebrates Gabriel’s announcement to the Blessed Virgin that she would give birth to the Lord Jesus).
Our objective is to have every minute of one entire year covered in prayer to end abortion. To make this happen, we will need LOTS of help, but it is very possible! There are three twenty-minute segments every hour to sign up for. Then you would just spend that twenty minutes praying for/meditating on an end to abortion.
Soon we will have the website set up to allow you to view which segments have not been committed to, and commit to them. We’re also working on a few resources to help you “stick it out” for twenty minutes if you’re not used to doing so! (You might be surprised how easy it can be to pray for twenty minutes!)
Clearly, there are many ways you could pray about this very important topic, but there is one prayer request that we feel should be shared by all of us – the expectant mothers considering abortion. I can’t even imagine the emotional turmoil that they must be enduring! I’m sure it can’t be an simple decision to make for anyone.
But what if every time a woman was considering an abortion during that year, no matter what time of day or night, there was someone praying for her? What if at that very moment there was someone crying out to God asking the Holy Spirit to help her love her unborn child enough to keep it? We believe that prayering to God for these women considering abortion can change some if not all these women's hearts to have their child!
So, if you want to help end abortion, join us! It doesn’t cost you anything but time in prayer. The project is absolutely open to anyone who wishes to join us! How you pray is up to you (Rosary, standard prayers, "free style", etc), what matters must is that you pray. Please sign up for the monthly newsletter to stay up to date on what’s going on with The Great Prayer Project, commit to a segment (or several!); and let’s do our part to pray an end to abortion!
